Working at Home with Wee Ones
Posted by Sandi Lilly-Valentine on August 8, 2007 in Uncategorized | ∞
The question of the hour, at least at my house, is : How do I write with a baby climbing my leg? My daughter is just getting mobile, and she wants to do EVERYTHING just like mommy….much to mommy’s dismay.
I’ve developed the following coping mechanisms. Feel free to comment and submit yours.
- Preparation is Key. Before I barricade my daughter and I in the office to begin writing, I make sure we have everything we need close at hand. Snack? Check. Toys? Check. Box of scrap paper for her to dig through? Check. Hey, it makes a mess, but it buys me at LEAST 1/2 hour of uninterrupted time. And that, my friends, is priceless.
- Just Like Mommy My daughter is much more likely to cooperate with my work at home dream if she gets to work, as well. She has her own keyboard, and spent twenty minutes yesterday staring industriously at Green Eggs and Ham, typing away!

Yeah! You have a blog!!
I didn’t know you had a girl. Yeah for girl mommies.
When my oldest daughter was 8 months, I started working at home. It was really hard at first to balance the time. I got into the habit of staying up later, or getting up earlier. I limited myself to only a few shows per day for her…she learned her phonics in just a few weeks with a Leap Frog video.
Also, the working along side me thing worked very well. She liked her little desk and keyboard as she got a little older.
The most important part was to put away everything at some point and focus 100% on her, doing her stuff, for a period each day. It’s way to easy to multi-task all day long and be half-present.
Yes, I have a blog
And a girl
Who, unfortunately (fortunately?) has learned a TON ‘o sign language this week from the baby Einstein kids…lol
